TL3 Derivative and Power Rule

Core Concepts¶

• The process of calculating $f'(x)$ is called differentiation.

• There are a few different ways to write the derivative:

  • Prime Notation: $y'$ or $f'(x)$

  • Leibniz Notation: $\dfrac{dy}{dx}$ or $\dfrac{df}{dx}$

Power Rule¶

It’s helpful to think of this rule as a 3-step process:

1. Bring down the old exponent and put it in front.

2. Keep the variable the same.

3. Subtract one from the exponent.
